2 Things to “Be” and 2 Things to “Do” In Your Life

No one sets an appointment with a thief. Robbery is an unexpected event discovered after it happens! You might see a theft in progress. It will be like this when the Lord Jesus returns.

This one event of history will alter everything. Extreme. Elements destroyed. All things laid bare. Panic. Regret. Power never experienced by human beings.

Every time God intervenes in history, something permanent happens. Changes for the better. Fresh, new, good, much improved, much needed. God is very good at fixing human blunders. How sad that these blunders fill the human timeline. How glad that God is intimately active in this “centuries–long” timeline.

The fact that things are headed toward destruction and re-creation should impact your daily living. Jesus’ return will alter daily life. This great and powerful, loving and merciful King will set up a Kingdom that will never misgovern in any way. At that critical point in history, only what is done for Christ will last. That is profound. Contemplate the impact.

So, how should you live each day? What kind of person should you aim to be? In Scripture, Peter lists 2 things to “be” and 2 things to “do.”

WHAT TO BE

  1. Holy – means pure, set apart, righteous, good.
  2. Godly – means devout, virtuous, sincere, reverent, even respectful.

“Being” these things can only happen when you are covered by Jesus’ blood. God sees right through an “act.” He looks at the heart. (1 Sam. 16:7)

WHAT TO DO

  1. Look forward to the day of God. (Have eager expectation from your heart for His return.)
  2. Speed its coming. (Get going and make an impact that will promote God’s agenda.)

(Some translations say, “wait eagerly for the day of God to come.” Keep in mind – healthy “waiting” is active waiting – not stagnant, lazy waiting. Most of life is waiting for something. The space you spend waiting between events occupies much of your life. In that space, you become. So actively fill your waiting with constructive things and godly character!)

The first coming of Jesus was almost unnoticed. He stealthily slipped into the human timeline to take back what is rightfully His: hearts of men, women, and children. If it weren’t for angels, shepherds, and wise men – His first coming might have even been off radar. In a silent, dark night, Jesus quietly slipped into a broken world with a brilliant, extraordinary strategy that would forever change the destiny of all who would dare to believe on Him.

The second coming will apparently not be nearly as quiet. It will, however, be so secret and meticulously crafted that no one will know the timing: not you, not Satan, not even the Son. (Mt. 24:36) Super-secret . . . but definitely not quiet! With that coming, Jesus will finish the job, and take back from the enemy everything rightfully His: all creation. He will restore it to its original, proper parameters. It will be a shock event. Definitely on everyone’s radar after it hits. Yet, very unexpected as people live their daily lives– like a thief.

These few verses in 2 Pet. 3:10-13 talk repeatedly about the upheaval God’s coming will bring.

So – how should you live today? Are you ready for the unknown timing of this event?
